Three cases cope with the development of something new to Teradyne's type of semiconductor test equipment. This case provides historic and administrative background for that other two cases. Teradyne: The Aurora Project handles the issues facing the mind of the start-up division accountable for developing and getting to promote something new according to technology considered necessary for the long run but unattractive to provide clients and, therefore, the operating divisions. Teradyne: Managing Troublesome Change deals with similar group of problems in the outlook during corporate management--particularly why the skunk works approach was necessary and just what new problems this method produces even when the work is effective.
